Toton, a shop based in Tonya-machi, Toyama City, is engaged in an initiative to upcycle furniture that would otherwise have been discarded, reconstructing it into contemporary designs and putting it back into circulation. In addition
to upcycling, the shop also stocks a wide range of furniture that has been repaired and cleaned.

The shop displays furniture that has been upcycled into contemporary designs, such as a unique table combining a bed mattress with an acrylic panel, and a sofa reupholstered with a different fabric. I thought it would be an excellent choice for furnishings in offices or cafés.

They also offer a furniture reupholstery service, so if you have a cherished antique sofa, for example, you can change the colour or fabric and continue using it as if it were brand new.

The spacious shop also features a dedicated DIY area. I even found individual table
tops and legs from old furniture for sale. Imagining unique pieces created by mixing and matching different legs really sparks the imagination and whets the appetite for DIY.
Every item in the selection is chosen based on specific criteria relating to people, the environment and sustainability, and they blended perfectly with the atmosphere of the shop’s furniture.

They were selling deadstock Hasami-yaki, a type of pottery with over 400 years of history from Hasami Town in Nagasaki Prefecture. Personally, I found the warm, geometric patterns particularly charming.

These bags, upcycled from discarded paragliders, are characterised by their vibrant colours and contrasting panels, resulting in a highly fashionable finish. Furthermore, the handles appear to be made from recycled bottles.
HOZUBAG
There were so many other interesting services and products that I couldn’t possibly cover them all here, so please do visit the shop to see for yourself. The venue also houses a co-working space, a restaurant and a photo studio.
